The fire broke out in Wickham Park in the middle of Melbourne on Monday morning and charred 100 acres.

The fire burned right up to Croton Road on the east side of the park and, what was most worrisome, this is right across the street from a large subdivision and many anxious homeowners.

Flames raced through Wickham Parks dense, dry pine woods with no hesitation. Pushed by winds gusting up to 15 miles per hour, the towering flames attracted nervous homeowners to its edge. Many contemplated their next move.

"If the wind changes and we see sparks and flames cross the road, then we will have to make a quick dash out of here," resident Tammy Jennings said.

The park is surrounded on the east and south by hundreds of home. Firefighters said the blaze started behind the Jaycees community center off on the northern end of the park.

Authorities questioned three kids between the ages of 11 and 13 spotted near where the fire started, but investigators said they still dont know who started it or how.

The fire pushed through the park toward a campground. One hundred campers were forced to leave.

The 391-acre park is one of the most diverse recreational areas in the county.

Firefighters said they would stay on the scene for some time, making sure the fire does not get out of the park area.
