Hazardous material crews responded to an underground fire Monday afternoon in west Baltimore.

WBAL-TV 11 News reported the fire erupted at the old Lasting Paints Inc. facility in the 200 block of South Franklintown Road.

Officials said the fire ignited as crews dug a trench to remove four underground tanks.

"There are a number of tunnels down there and 4,000-gallon tanks that contain solutions that are used in the manufacturing of paint," fire spokesman Kevin Cartwright said.

Fire officials say the paint chemicals contained in the tanks do not post a threat to nearby residents.

Last May, a four-alarm fire destroyed a warehouse at the same location. One man died in that blaze.
