DOVER, Del. -- On race day, ever wonder what it would be like to be right down there in the middle of it all rather than sitting in the stands?
Now, that dream can become a reality.
Dover International Speedway has partnered with the National Fallen Firefighters Association for an event that will have hearts of NASCAR fans racing.
The pre-race events are set for Sept. 21 at the "Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup."
For $99, fans will get a trackside tour on the racing surface while the teams are preparing for the race, an all-you-can-eat buffet including beverages, special guest appearances and the race ticket valued at $84.
A portion of the proceeds will go to the NFFF, said Mark Rossi, vice-president of marketing at Dover Motorsports Inc.
"We're excited about honoring these heroes. We're looking for a good turnout of firefighters."
The lives of fallen heroes will be remembered during a special ceremony prior to the race. Details are still being worked out on that feature. However, Rossi said race officials are committed to making the event memorable.
Ron Siarnicki, NFFF executive director, said he is excited about the partnership with Dover Motorsports. "I applaud their enthusiasm, and their willingness to reach out to us."
Siarnicki said other NFFF supporters are working to get buses available for the day. "I think that would be great. It would be so much more convenient to take a bus to the track."
