Officials say the 23-year-old man was working on the 48th floor at the Newport Beachside Resort on Collins Avenue when he fell about 20 feet.

The man had a safety line, but firefighters said it apparently did not work. Because of the height involved, firefighters turned a trash bin into a rescue basket to bring him down.

"It was a pretty dangerous operation, so all precautions were taken to make sure that the patient was removed safely and also the safety of our personnel on the scene," said Joseph Cavallo, of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

He suffered a head injury and was taken by ambulance to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Rescuers said the man was alert when he was transported. His condition is not known.
