Off-duty fire chief throws in helping hand.

Firefighters put out a three-alarm blaze that damaged a Dallastown row home Thursday afternoon.

The fire apparently started in the third floor of the home at 255 S. Pleasant St., which is about two blocks from the Dallastown Square.

A York Area Regional Police Department officer told News 8 that the Red Lion fire chief lives next door to the house that caught fire. David Stump spotted the fire while walking a dog and tried to douse the flames with a garden hose, according to the officer.

"I think me being able to get the garden hose on it actually made a big difference because I was able to contain it. I didn't have a lot of water pressure like what comes out of a fire hose, but I had enough that I could keep it in there and I could get the ceiling," said Stump.

Ultimately, it took a lot of firefighters to put the fire out. There is no word on a cause at this point.
