A string of fires have popped up around the Savannah area recently. Last night, a fire demolished an abandoned building on 33rd Street. Luckily the home was abandoned and no one was hurt, but Savannah firefighters have been no strangers to blazes around town.
They have been called to nine fires in eight days in different parts of Savannah, and fire department spokesman Matt Stanley says they may know what's causing the sudden increase. "Some of it's because we've had a cool snap," he said. "When the weather cools down, people start using portable heaters again."
Stanley also says faulty equipment and arson have been the cause of several fires in the area.
