DETROIT --
One person was taken to an area hospital while firefighters battled a three-home blaze on Maplewood and Northfield streets in west Detroit.
The fire originated on the second floor of a home and had spread to two neighboring homes.
The homeowner of the first house that caught fire was sleeping on the top story when the fire broke out.
His son told Local 4 News that his father crawled to the window of the second floor and slid down the roof to escape the fire.
He suffered minor injuries and was transported to Henry Ford Hospital.
Sky 4 reporter Ross Marroso said the smoke was so thick it billowed from the roof and had traveled about 1,000 feet in the air.
Firefighters will continue to investigate how the fire started.
