NEW YORK (AP) -- A fire in an equipment room spread smoke inside New York's busy Pennsylvania Station, shutting down commuter train tracks and forcing an evacuation Thursday evening, the fire department said.
Hundreds of people were chased from the transit hub by the smoke, and two minor injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire wasn't immediately identified.
The fire was reported about 7:40 p.m., Amtrak spokeswoman Tracy Connell said. The station was evacuated shortly afterward, and train service was halted. The station has several tracks for Amtrak, New Jersey Transit, Metro-North Railroad and the Long Island Rail Road.
Firefighters had the fire contained in an equipment room but it was still burning more than an hour later, fire department Deputy Chief John Norman said. More than a dozens fire trucks stood outside.
One firefighter suffered an eye injury, and a railroad employee suffered smoke inhalation, Norman said.
Penn Station is the city's busiest transportation hub, serving some 550,000 passengers a day.
