DAYTON, Ky. --

Firefighters found themselves in a tough, two-front fight over the weekend. Not only did they battle flames, but also the weather.

They said they responded a fire in Dayton, Ky., Saturday that left two homes destroyed.

The fire began near the corner of Vine and Third streets on the second floor of a home. Firefighters said the flames spread quickly and leapt to a neighboring home.

The weather had a huge impact on their efforts.

"Definitely it's tough for these guys to maneuver around," said Dayton Fire Chief Denny Lynn. "It wears them out quicker -- you slip you fall. It takes longer for trucks to get here."

Once the rescuers from Dayton-Bellvue, Fort Thomas and Newport worked through the wintry weather, they were able to get the blaze under control.

They said they saved a third house from the fire, but two houses were a total loss.

The Red Cross is helping the fire victims.
