The family of a local firefighter who was killed in a house fire spoke Friday about their painful loss.

Lt. Nick Picozzi Jr., 35, died Wednesday while battling a fire in Upper Chichester.

Picozzi went into the burning home on Moser Street and apparently fell into the basement.

Three other firefighters were injured while trying to save him.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the blaze and the events that led up to his death. The three-alarm fire might have been sparked when a tree fell across some nearby power lines, NBC 10 reported. No one was in the house when the fire started.

Picozzi's grieving family honored his memory on Friday night and issued the following statement:

"The entire family of Nick Picozzi would like to express their deepest gratitude for the many thoughts, prayers and kindness shown to our family. Nick is loved and missed by everyone. He was a wonderful husband, a terrific dad, and a loyal son, brother, and uncle. Nick loved being a father to his two sons and was also devoted to helping the neighborhood kids stay on the straight and narrow. He was passionate about being a firefighter. If there was anyone you wanted next to you, it was Nick. A friend recently said she slept well knowing Nicky was on duty. He died the way he lived -- a hero to all. We understand your need to be informed, but we wish that you continue to respect the family's privacy during this most difficult time. Thank you."

The viewing for Picozzi will be held Monday from 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Holy Saviour Catholic Church, located at 108 E. Ridge Road in Linwood.

His funeral will be held Tuesday at noon at the same church.
