An extra-alarm fire on the city's South Side early Sunday leaves one firefighter injured.
Flames broke out just before 2 a.m. in a vacant two-flat at 9010 South Escanaba Avenue.
The fire threatened a home next door and smoke was so thick it forced neighbors to evacuate, NBC 5's Sharon Wright reported from the scene.
"Several of the residents did come out of the building because of the smoke, concerns about smoke inhalation," said Deputy Fire Chief Jerome Shelton. "Everyone reentered the building. There was no damage to the six-flat building to the north of the fire building."
F irefighters were exhausted fighting the fire, and Shelton said, while newer equipment provides a real assist, it can be more tiring because it is so heavy.
One firefighter was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital with minor injuries, officials said.
No residents were hurt.
Investigators were still trying to pinpoint what caused the blaze, Wright reported.
