Firefighters found a female dead after extinguishing flames in an apartment on the city's east side Thursday evening, fire and police officials said.

The body was found in the unit in the 3800 block of North Emerson Avenue. Police said the female's identity and cause of death weren't immediately known.

Firefighters were called to the apartment at about 5:45 p.m. They found a fire in a bedroom, extinguished it, and then discovered the body as they were removing a burned mattress, Indianapolis fire Capt. Gregg Harris said.

Police said they were investigating the death. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

The fire caused about $9,000 worth of damage, Harris said.
