MILWAUKEE --

Milwaukee firefighters rescued a 6-month-old baby and a woman from a burning apartment early Saturday morning.

Firefighters said they responded to the call at about 5 a.m. at 9414 West Sheridan, near 95th Street, after patrolling police saw the flames.

The woman and baby were taken to the hospital.

Hospital officials said a 27-year-old woman is in critical condition with burns covering 25 to 39 percent of her body. The 6-month-old is being treated for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters said the fire started on a stove, possibly because food was left unattended. A total of 14 people were displaced from the building; which had working smoke detectors.

Firefighters did not say if the baby and woman were related.
