Kentucky Firefighter Hurts Ankle at Fire

March 22, 2006
The cause of the early morning fire remains under investigation.

Arson investigators are looking into an early-morning blaze in Louisville.

The fire began just after 2 a.m. in a vacant apartment building at 22nd and Howard streets, WLKY NewsChannel 32 reported Wednesday.

Firefighters said the blaze started in the back of the building on the second floor. Maj. Mark Abner said fires like this one are common when the temperature outside fluctuates.

"When you get these cold snaps this time of the year, you get nice warm days and then it drops," he said. "People need to keep in mind space heaters ... make sure they are in good working condition."

One firefighter suffered a sprained ankle when he slipped outside on the pavement.

It's not known what caused the blaze, nor was a damage estimate available.
