HOUSTON --

Six children were rescued on Tuesday after being trapped in a southwest Houston house that caught fire, KPRC Local 2 reported.

The blaze broke out at about 11:30 a.m. in the 15000 block of Cosair at Muskingum Lane.

Investigators said Quelia Jackson was babysitting the children when she smelled smoke and tried to get them all to safety.

But, burglar bars on the doors and windows trapped them, officials said.

Neighbors heard Jackson's calls for help and pried the burglar bars open.

"I was just pushing as hard as I can -- broke the glass to see if I could get another way out. But I couldn't. I was scared because I thought nobody would hear me screaming. I was just trying my best to get the kids out," Jackson said.

Everyone inside escaped safely and no one was injured.

Investigators said the blaze appeared to have started in the garage from flammable materials left too close to a water heater.
