CARTHAGE, Ohio --
Heavy smoke fills a Carthage home, trapping four people inside.
Firefighters say the smoke was coming from the second floor of a two-story, two-family dwelling on Anthony Wayne Street.
The fire was in the basement and started in a gas dryer.
The fire spread to the floor joists where it was contained, but the smoke traveled up the stairwell and blocked the escape for the occupants.
They had to be rescued by ladder from a second floor balcony.
Firefighters also ushered an elderly woman out of a first-floor apartment.
One firefighter suffered a hand injury when a charged hose line failed in the street.
Smoke alarms were sounding in the house.
The fire loss is listed at $10,000.
