A Baltimore firefighter remains hospitalized after falling from a fire engine en route to a house fire yesterday.
It happened around 2:20 a.m. Thursday, as firefighters from Baltimore's Engine 6 responded to a report of a house fire in the 1200 block of East Lafayette Avenue in East Baltimore.
Baltimore City spokesman Kevin Cartwright said the truck made two left turns, and during the second left turn, firefighter Bryan Isaacs fell out of the cabin and into the street.
"Unfortunately, he suffered a head injury that resulted in multiple fractures," Cartwright said.
Isaacs was treated on the scene by paramedics and transported to Shock Trauma where he was treated in the Trauma Resuscitation Unit.
Cartwright said it's not known how Isaacs fell out of the truck -- and the fire department is currently investigating the incident. He said whether Isaacs was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident would "absolutely" be investigated -- but that it is too early to speculate on possible causes.
"He's the only one who can give the best account, but whether he can recall that, we don't know."
Cartwright said Isaacs was in a medically induced coma yesterday, but at last report he showed remarkable progress. As of Friday afternoon, he was sitting up in a chair and, according to Cartwright, doing "unbelievably well."
"His mother, father, fiance have been by his side around the clock -- as well as members of the fire department."
He said Isaacs will remain in Shock Trauma throughout the weekend and may require some rehabilitation due to his head injuries.
"He remains in our prayers for a full recovery. It's a very unfortunate incident."
Isaacs, who Cartwright said is in his 30's, is a seven-year veteran of the Baltimore City Fire Department.
