The FDNY is burning rubber.
New York's Bravest got to the scene of emergencies a blazing 15 seconds faster on average last year than in 2005.
In fact, the department celebrated a banner 2006, in which several statistics, including fires, fire fatalities and false alarms, dropped.
"It's been a very good year," said Chief of Department Salvatore Cassano.
One figure that rose for the FDNY in 2006 was the number of medical emergencies to which firefighters responded. They increased from 202,526 in 2005 to 209,397 last year.
After a bitter 2005, in which critics largely attributed a rise in response times to Mayor Bloomberg's shuttering of several firehouses, those times dropped in 2006 from 5 minutes 9 seconds to 4-54.
