Snow Slows Colorado Firefighters

Flames badly damaged a home in Jefferson County Wednesday afternoon after a fire broke out inside.

Firefighters rushed to the home, located in the 7600 block of Hans Peak, near Ken Caryl and Simms, but heavy snow made conditions it tough for West Metro crews to extinguish the flames.

Firefighters had a difficult time locating the hydrant, which was covered in snow, and then had to run the hose through 1 1/5 blocks to get from the hydrant to the home.

Firefighters have encouraged homeowners to clear the snow around fire hydrants so that it's easier for crews to locate it during an emergency.

Roads are still snowy and ice-packed in the area.

Part of the roof collapsed and half of the home was destroyed. Firefighters said they are worried that the chimney may collapse and that the structural integrity of the home has been compromised, 7NEWS reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No one was home at the time and no one was hurt.
