PITTSBURGH --
Three Pittsburgh children were pulled from a burning building overnight and one of them, age 6, did not survive.
The two-alarm fire broke out around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday in the 6400 block of Winslow Street in the Larimer neighborhood.
Isaiah Marshman died, and two other children, ages 1 and 2, were taken to a hospital. Their conditions are not known at this time.
Before firefighters attempted their rescue, a neighbor who asked to remain unidentified tried to go in first.
"She was out here screaming for help, and you could tell something was wrong," the neighbor said. "I came outside, and you could see the smoke coming out the house."
Mia Marshman was able to escape the blaze with one of her children. But she said her other children were still inside, so the neighbor tried to go in.
"The front door, I tried to go in, and the smoke knocked me right back out the door," the neighbor said. "I just took one gulp of that smoke, and it chased me right back out."
Capt. Jim Petruzzi said he and a second firefighter went in through the second-floor window. They immediately bumped into a bed while blinded by smoke and found the 2-year-old unconscious.
They went back inside a second time and found Isiah Marshman in the second bed. He later died at UPMC Mercy Hospital.
Fire investigators determined that a pot left on a stove accidentally started the blaze.
An autopsy will determine Marshman's cause of death.
The house is located on the same street where five children between the ages of 7 and 3 were killed in a fire last year. Those children's mothers, Shakita Mangham and Furaha Love, are awaiting sentencing for their no-contest pleas to charges of involuntary manslaughter.
