GLENDALE, Ariz. -- A 22-year-old woman is dead after crashing her vehicle into a Glendale Fire Department ladder truck parked while firefighters were on an emergency call, police said.

The victim has been identified as Nicole Ward.

The fire truck, with its lights flashing, was parked in a curb lane in front of a house near 51st and Greenway avenues, police said.

Firefighters said they heard a huge crash while treating a man who had fallen.

They ran to their truck and discovered Ward had plowed head-first into the vehicle.

The woman was trapped inside. After freeing her, Ward was transported to John C. Lincoln Hospital where she died a short time later, police said.
