SANFORD, Fla. --

Monday night, massive flames consumed a hotel under construction in Sanford. The State Fire Marshal was on the way to the Value Place hotel on west 27th Street at US-17/92 Tuesday morning to try to figure out what happened.

The fire consumed a four-story wood building. All of it burned to the ground except for two concrete stairways and a concrete elevator shaft.

"I can't believe how fast it went up," said Sam Morar, an eyewitness to the fire.

It was an amazing sight for those who witnessed the fire in Sanford, Monday night. The hotel was under construction when it went up in flames and kept firefighters at a safe distance as they sprayed as much water on it as possible. Sam Morar was across the street when he grabbed his cell phone and started taking pictures.

"You could practically feel the heat from across the street," Morar said. "I was just hoping that the flames didn't jump across the street."

The building was nowhere near completion. Construction workers hadn't installed the sprinkler system yet.

Neighbors to the building were talking about the flames that quickly devoured the entire building and some construction equipment.

"I've seen some fires, but that was a new building. It just went up. It was unbelievable how fast it went up," said Rick Lafferty.

It will be up to the State Fire Marshal's Office to figure out not only where the fire started, but also how it happened to a building that was still under construction.
