Georgetown, Indiana -- A man who spent most of his life serving others said he was happy to end up in jail.
He is a firefighter who could spend years in prison while his station tries to recoup some losses.
David Page spent a few hours here at the Floyd County jail Tuesday night accused of stealing thousands of dollars from his volunteer fire station.
The firehouse is located at Georgtown, Indiana. It is where David Page's heart lived, he has been there for 19 years.
"He got mixed up in something he shouldn't have got mixed up in and he knew he was doing wrong," says Chief Terry Herthel of the Georgetown Fire Department.
As Treasurer, Page and his wife handled the fire station books. Chief Herthel says they wrote checks to themselves at $200 and $5,000 a pop. "Started getting credit card bills for gas and atm usage," says Herthel. "Definitely something was going on."
Indiana State Police arrested Page on Tuesday and charged him with 12 counts of theft, amounting to more than $13,000.
"Relieved the ordeal is coming to an end. His exact words to me were I don't care what happens to me as long as they don't do nothing to the fire department," says the Chief. "That's how much he cared about this place."
Firefighting was Page's passion. He worked full time at the Lyndon Fire Department.
The Chief there did not return calls for comment.
Page resigned from the Georgetown Volunteer Department after he was confronted about the checks. The missing money strained the Department. They run on $148,000 a year.
"Couldn't buy any equipment," says the Chief. "Everything from the Christmas party for the people to the three dollars per run they didn't get that money. That affected our firefighters too."
David Page didn't want to talk to WHAS11 on Tuesday night. But Wednesday morning, the Floyd County prosecutor will. He'll discuss how much money was taken and whether more arrests are possible.
