The Honolulu Fire Department's new was sworn into office on Tuesday. Kenneth Silva becomes the city and county's 33rd fire chief.
Silva named Alvin Tomita as his new deputy chief.
Retiring Chief Attilio Leonardi had a few remarks for his successor.
"We expect you to lead with pride, service and dedication, in fulfilling our mission, and the mission of the city charter, and that is to protect the lives and property of the citizens of the City and County of Honolulu, and the members of the Honolulu Fire Department," Leonardi said.
Leonardi then handed over the Speaking Trumpet. It is a symbol of the times before modern communications, such as two-way radios.
Silva takes over the command of 1,100 firefighters in 42 engine companies across Oahu. Silva said he intends to put fire stations at the top of his "to do" list.
"Fire station repair and improvements -- our stations need to be fixed, many are in need of serious repair. I pledge to make this a top priority," Silva said. "I pledge to the citizens of the City and County of Honolulu and the members of the Honolulu Fire Department to be diligent and focused, to work to provide for safer community and a workforce that is properly trained and supported to fulfill their mission."
