Busy Morning for Montgomery County Firefighters

A middle school was evacuated after a major gas line rupture.

A construction worker was killed Thursday morning at an senior community complex in Montgomery County.

The unidentified man suffered extensive trauma and was in cardiac arrest when rescue personnel arrived on the scene in Aspen Hill just after 8:15 a.m. The investigation revealed he fell down a flight of stairs and struck his head on a wall, said Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services.

The man, who was working at a construction site at Leisure World, was pronounced dead at a local hospital, Piringer said.

A few hours later, students at Farquhar Middle School near Olney were evacuated after a four-inch gas line was severed by a piece of construction equipment.

Fire and HAZMAT crews who responded directed master streams in an attempt to dissipate fumes. No injuries were reported, Piringer said, adding that units will remain on the scene until the leak is handled by the gas company.

Meanwhile, about the same time in Damascus, units were sent to the Safeway for smoke conditions after a power surge. That incident was caused by a vehicle that struck a nearby transformer, he said.

"It's been a hectic morning."
