BETHESDA, Md. --

Fire officials said a fatal house fire in Bethesda Wednesday morning was started accidentally.

The fire broke out at about 2 a.m. at a home in the 5900 block of Rolston Road.

An elderly couple and their adult son were inside the house at the time. The couple made it out of the house, officials said. They met responders near the front door.

The couple's son, described as being in his 50s, did not make it out. He was found on the second floor minutes after the firefighters arrived. The victim's name has not been released yet.

"The elderly couple was in a bit of a shock," said Capt. Oscar Garcia of Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.

Firefighters said the blaze caused so much damage that investigators may never be able to determine the exact cause.

Family members came to the scene on Wednesday morning to try to salvage items from the home.
