DETROIT --
Firefighters are investigating a possible arson that left 100 people homeless and one man feared dead after a blaze tore through a four-story apartment building near Wayne State campus on Wednesday morning.
"I just lost everything tonight, so I am really sad," said victim Nemo Simmons.
Firefighters were finally able to enter the building on Forest and Second Street Wednesday afternoon, hours after they battled the five-alarm fire that broke out around 3:30 a.m. on Detroit's west side.
According to fire officials, the massive blaze started on the fourth floor and flames quickly spread throughout the horseshoe-shaped building.
Fire investigators said the man who lived in the fourth-floor corner apartment where the fire started has not been found.
Officials said they fear he may have died in the blaze.
Residents told Local 4 News that the man had been evicted several months ago and refused to leave.
About 20 college students, residents and seniors, occupied the building.
One victim described the chilling scene to Local 4, "The manager of the building came around 3:45 and was banging on my door, telling me to get out because there was a fire. At first, I thought I was dreaming and then I realized everyone was leaving, and then I heard the sirens so I grabbed my computer and my book bag and headed downstairs," said Vincent Karkwood.
Two people were taken to an area hospital for minor injuries and smoke inhalation.
The Red Cross and Salvation Army are on the scene assisting victims.
