MADISON, Wis. --

Three residents escaped uninjured after discovering a fire in their Madison home early Friday morning.

Smoke, heat and water caused around $20,000 damage to the home at 432 N. Blackhawk Avenue.

The fire call was dispatched at 1:32 a.m. and firefighters arrived five minutes later. They quickly located the fire in a bedroom and extinguished it with water.

The fire was declared under control within 10 minutes of the fire departments arrival. Firefighters searched the home and confirmed that everyone was outside. The family dog also escaped harm.

Investigators believe that lightning caused the fire. After examining the fire scene, it appears that a nearby lightning strike caused an electrical surge that traveled into the homes wiring, leading to the fire, according to the Madison Fire Department.
