A late-night fire threatened several dozen animals in Will County Tuesday night. The blaze broke out in a stable in Monee sometime after 10 p.m.
Firefighters called for backup because of a possible water shortage.
The barn was engulfed in flames when the Monee Fire Department arrived, but all the animals -- 18 horses and half a dozen sheep -- were rescued.
Monee Fire Chief Carl Nieland said that his crew has trained on rescuing livestock, and it paid off in this fire.
"I'm extremely proud of not only my members of the Monee Fire Protection District, but of all the mutual aid companies that came to help us," he said.
One person was treated for smoke inhalation.
