Two men died in separate tragedies Sunday after blazes destroyed their homes in Milton and Mattapoisett.
The victim in the Milton inferno was identified as 55-year-old Robert Kane, described by family and neighbors as a recluse who had cared for his mother in the house until her recent death. According to Milton Fire Chief Malcolm Larson, Kane's home - teeming with old newspapers, magazines, mattresses and a propane container - was a fire waiting to happen.
Milton Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Mahony said firefighters received a call at about 7:35 p.m. from Kane saying his house was ablaze.
"The family is shocked and very saddened by Robert's death," said the victim's sister-in-law Lorraine Kane.
The Mattapoisett fire, meanwhile, was reported at 12:47 p.m., and claimed the life of Carlton Cook, who lived alone, according to town fire chief Ron Scott.
"The department did a very fine job, but unfortunately the house was completely engulfed in flames by the time we arrived," Scott said.
Both fires are under investigation by the state fire marshal.
