WASHINGTON, D.C. --

Volunteer firefighters may soon get help paying for rising fuel costs.

Congressman Jason Altmire and Sen. Bob Casey have proposed legislation that would help departments across the country.

High diesel prices, which hit a record of $4.81 per gallon Wednesday, have prompted some Pennsylvania volunteer departments to cut back.

Firefighters in Mount Pleasant announced in April that they would no longer back up other departments.

Many departments have reported that high fuel prices prevent them responding to emergencies with the amount of trucks and equipment recommended under guidelines from the National Fire Protection Association.

Altmire and Casey were scheduled to release more details on their legislation in a news conference Wednesday afternoon.
