SAN DIEGO --

The Monte Carlo hotel in Las Vegas quickly turned into a burning inferno within a matter of minutes. A number of floors were damaged due to the fire in late January.

Training for high-rise fires, that is what San Diego Firefighters were doing Sunday at the unoccupied Sunroad office building in Kearny Mesa.

Nearly 50 Firefighters were part of the training, a simulated two-alarm fire, one of the largest exercises in San Diego.

"We don't have high rise fires where we actually have working fires above ground. So we take these opportunities to give our crews the latest information to practice skills," Criss Brainard of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said.

The training helps crews maintain their firefighting skills - ready to respond at a moments notice. At least 12-engine truck companies, along with other firefighting apparatus, were part of the exercise.
