SPARTANBURG, S.C. --

One person was killed as a rapidly spreading fire tore through a Spartanburg County apartment building early Sunday morning.

The fire started around 4 a.m. Sunday at the Wildwood Apartments complex on Bryant road.

Krista Hicks with the Spartanburg Coroner's Office said 22-year-old Brandi Michelle Massey died in the fire.

Massey was visiting a friend in one of the apartments.

Investigators said they believe the fire started after food was left cooking on the stove in one of the apartments.

Investigators said that the fire spread quickly because the building at was built in the 1970s before firewalls were required in the attic.

"There's no firewalls in these buildings, whatsoever, to separate one unit from the other, Whitney Fire Department Chief Shawn Petras told WYFF News 4. If you get a fire in one and it gets into your attic, it pretty much just runs the whole attic as it wants to."

The building had 16 apartments and 40 people were left without homes.
