The fire started on an upstairs balcony at about 9:30 a.m. in the 5000 block of Boca Raton Boulevard in the Woodhaven area.

A woman who is believed to have discarded the cigarette said she smoked three cigarettes on the balcony Tuesday morning.

According to firefighters, at least one resident alerted neighbors by knocking loudly on several apartment doors.

The fire destroyed at least 12 units of the Huntington Apartments. Eight of the units were occupied and 10 residents have been displaced.

The roof of one of the units collapsed. A firefighter inside one of the units issued a distress call, but was able to escape the fire unharmed.

Witnesses reported hearing several small explosions. Fire investigators said the explosions probably were the result of aerosol cans bursting.

Everyone was able to escape.

No humans were injured, but one dog died as a result of the fire.
