A couple was critically burned in the home.

A Volusia County couple were critically burned in their home Monday morning when their Christmas tree sparked a fire.

It happened at their home along Hamilton Avenue near Orange City, WESH 2 News reported.

The couple was home with their young son when the Christmas tree apparently fell over on a lit candle. The woman, who is nine months pregnant, was taken by ambulance to the Orlando Regional Medical Center burn unit. Her husband was flown to ORMC, and the boy wasn't hurt.

Neighbors said a passer-by who is a power company worker was first on the scene. The power worker worked to put out the fire with a garden hose until firefighters arrived.

The state fire marshal will investigate, but it appears the fire was an accident.

Firefighters said real Christmas trees should be disposed of, since most are dried out by now.
