Are you safe at work from carbon monoxide poisoning?
The odorless gas can be a killer, and KMBC's Bev Chapman reported that few businesses are equipped to detect CO before it reaches employees.
Last week, firefighters were called to a downtown business were CO fumes measured at 400 parts per million, which is a potentially lethal level.
Fire officials said heavy equipment, idling trucks and some cleaning solvents could set off a CO detector.
Although Kansas City and its surrounding cities don't have ordinances requiring CO detectors, seven states and several cities do, including Chicago and St. Louis. Fire officials predict more cities will pass similar ordinances in the future.
Chapman reported that some CO detectors are priced at $40.
"They're very affordable, especially when you consider what the consequences of not having one in your home would be," said Capt. Scott Casey, with the Overland Park Fire Department.
