WASHINGTON --
A D.C. fire engine struck and critically injured a pedestrian at 14th and Randolph streets in Northwest Washington early Saturday, police said.
The 43-year-old man was struck just after midnight, police said.
Fire officials said Engine 11 was headed to a call for a house fire when firefighters saw a man standing on the double yellow center line. As the fire truck approached, with lights and sirens activated, the man darted in front of the truck, apparently attempting to cross.
The man was hit and thrown onto the road, police said. He was listed in critical condition Saturday afternoon at Washington Hospital Center.
Police are not releasing the man's identity.
The intersection was blocked for several hours while police investigated.
