Emergency crews are at the scene of an accident involving a fire truck and tanker truck that closed an intersection and forced evacuations.
The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 158 and N.C. Highway 68 in Stokesdale.
Officials said a fire truck from Stokesdale was responding to a call and was traveling east on Highway 158 when it collided with a tanker truck traveling north on Highway 68.
The tanker truck overturned, and about 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled. Hazmat crews worked to contain the spill.
Authorities said they expected the intersection to be closed into Tuesday night.
Four firefighters on the truck and the driver of the tanker were taken to Moses Cone Hospital with minor injuries.
Four businesses, two residences and Stokesdale Elementary School were evacuated. The school dismissed students at 2:30 p.m.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area.
Parents with children at Stokesdale Elementary School were asked to be patient as officials said it may take longer for students on buses to get home.
