A pregnant woman due to deliver on Thursday was killed in a fire at a Lincoln apartment

Firefighters were called to 2800 Wood Boulevard in south Lincoln just before 6 a.m. Thursday where they found two people inside the apartment. The pregnant woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 2-year-old daughter was taken to a hospital, and there was no word on her condition.

Several other people had to be evacuated.

The complex did not have a sprinkler system, authorities said. Lincoln Fire Department investigators believe a faulty extension cord that was near the victims' bed was what caused the fire.

"A very light-weight extension cord that was running an electrical lamp in the bedroom -- it failed right at the junction and ignited the bedding as she was sleeping, and then the fire ensued," said Lincoln Fire Department's Bill Moody.

The victims names have not been released.
