Michigan Refinery Explodes, Residents on Alert

Dec. 14, 2006
Fire officials said the fire is contained to the refinery.

A refinery, owned by Imperial Oil Co., exploded in Sarnia, Ontario early Thursday morning.

The refinery is located on the other side of the Blue Water Bridge, across the river from Port Huron.

Residents told Local 4 they heard a loud explosion around 3:00 a.m. Thursday.

Fire officials said the fire is contained to the refinery, and started in what is called a hydrocracking unit. The unit takes heavy oil and converts it to a lighter grade oil. Firefighters from Imperial Oil and the Sarnia Fire Department have been able to control the flames but are still working to put out the fire. Officials said they don't know how long it will continue to burn.

Everyone at the plant has been accounted for, according to plant officials.

Police said traffic in the area is moving smoothly now, and the Blue Water Bridge is open for operation as normal. Officials have asked residents who live north or north east of the refinery to stay indoors, make sure their windows are securely shut and turn off their heating systems.
