Rising Waters Prompt California Evacuations

Jan. 2, 2006

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered in some low-lying areas of El Dorado County, according to a sheriff's office news release.

The El Dorado County Office of Emergency Services is advising that mandatory evacuations are ordered for residents in low lying areas of Nashville and Gold Beach along Highwy 49 in south El Dorado County.

The evacuations have been prompted because of rising waters from the Cosumnes River, according to the release. The evacuation area is from Sand Ridge Road to the Amador County line.

According to KCRA 3 chief meteorologist Mark Finan, from Friday morning to Saturday morning, the town of Georgetown received more than seven inches of rain, and Pollock Pines received more than four inches.

Shelters have been established at the Amador County Fairgrounds in Plymouth and at the Diamond Springs Firefighter's Memorial Hall.

Additionally, OES is encouraging motorists not to travel on Highway 50 east of Pollock Pines due to the severe weather conditions. Consideration is currently being given to closing Highway 50, the release said.
