Firefighters in Chesterfield responded to a call at 2053 hours on Dec. 3, for a possible apartment fire at 16413 Jeff Davis Hwy. in Colonial Woods Apartments.
Officials said firefighters arriving on scene found heavy smoke coming from the three story building. Crews made entry and conducted a primary search, discovering a male victim inside. Crews removed the victim and he was transported to Southside Regional Hospital where officials say he later died.
The victim has been identified as 60-year-old Aubrey Dickson.
There a was small amount of fire, officials said, which was brought under control in about 30 minutes.
Responding were CO1, Engine 18, Engine 12, Truck 12, Truck 14 and an ambulance from Bensley-Bermuda Volunteer responded. Colonial Heights responded with Engine 1 on a mutual aid call to provide coverage at Ettrick Station and Truck 3 provided coverage for Ettrick also, Engine 17 (Chesterfield) provided coverage for the Chester and Dutch Gap areas.
Firefighters had to deal with cold conditions and wind chills.
Officials said the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental as a result of discarded smoking materials.
