Warehouse Burns in West Palm Beach

Dec. 11, 2006
The cause is under investigation.

A fire that burned through an abandoned warehouse in downtown West Palm Beach is under control, authorities said.

Fire Department officials said about 40 firefighters arrived at the burning three-story building on Evernia St. and South Dixie Highway late Monday morning.

Authorities said the boarded up warehouse caught fire around 10:30 a.m., though they have not released the cause of the blaze.

The Fire Department evacuated the area and closed streets from Fern to Clematis St. and Dixie to Quadrille for fear the building may collapse.

Fire Department officials said the building is expected to be a total loss.

Police said a few streets in downtown West Palm Beach will be closed until further notice while construction crews bring in heavy equipment to demolish the structure.

Police said Dixie Highway (between Datura & Evernia Streets) and the 400 blocks of Evernia Street (between Dixie & Quadrille Blvd.) and Datura Street (between Dixie & Quadrille Blvd.) will be closed until further notice.
