Firefighters found the man dead inside the burning home on the 1200 block of West Harold Street.
Officials said that a kerosene heater that was found near the body and fuel that was stored near the heater combined to set off the fire.
The fuel was stored in plastic jugs that melted from the nearby heat source, Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayres said. The heater then ignited the fuel, sparking the 1:20 a.m. blaze in North Philadelphia, he said.
The fire engulfed much of the first floor, but was quickly brought under control, authorities said.
The victim was not immediately identified.
