A former reserve sheriff's deputy in Volusia County, Fla., was sentenced Wednesday to one year in jail for working as an officer and a firefighter at the same time, according to a Local 6 News report.
Richard Barrett, who worked as a reserve deputy for more than 15 years, also was employed by the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department, investigators said.
Detectives said Barrett was working shifts at the fire department while on the clock at the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
Barrett was also charged with stealing $20,000, Local 6 News reporter Tarik Minor said.
Wednesday, Barrett's family said he deserves a second chance after paying the money back.
"There is still hope," Barrett's wife, Evelyn, said. "It is good the judge said one year but it is still hard because I'm alone here and my immigration problem. I will still continue to fight for my family.
Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said he does not feel sorry for Barrett. He said he feels betrayed by Barrett.
"He was placed in a position of trust and he abused it, according to Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson," Minor said.
Barrett was transported to the Volusia County Jail to begin serving time.
