An attempt to find something in the dark nearly burned down a Des Moines home Wednesday morning.
Firefighters were called to 1615 Franklin Ave. just before 7 a.m. Wednesday.
Firefighters managed to put out the fire that started in a bedroom.
Des Moines firefighters said a woman used a cigarette lighter like a flashlight in order to find something under her grandmother's bed.
The lighter accidentally lit the bed on fire and spread through the room.
"The family did try briefly to extinguish the fire on their own, but realized it was out of control rather quickly and got a call to 911, which allowed us to get on the scene quickly enough to stop it at one room," said Lt. Joe Hogan, of Des Moines Fire Department.
Everyone in the home got out safely. The Red Cross is helping the family find shelter.
