Investigators are trying to determine the cause of an early-morning house fire.
The fire broke out about 3 a.m. at a residence in the 2200 block of Garland Avenue, WLKY NewsChannel 32's Natasha Collins reported Tuesday.
Fire officials said that four people inside the home escaped unharmed.
"If they didn't have that smoke detector, we could have had a real tragic story here," Louisville Fire Lt. Tom Carroll said.
Investigators said a kerosene heater may be responsible for sparking the blaze.
Belinda Allen said luck was on her side; her mother woke up early and was able to alert the rest of the family, Collins reported.
"Something told her to wake up like she normally do for prayer, and she just seen it on fire," Allen said.
Added neighbor Hugh Smith: "Somebody was hollering, and the next thing I knew, I saw the house on fire."
Allen said she and her family will stay with a sister just a few blocks away, and added that the holiday gifts that went up in flames are inconsequential; she's just glad everyone made it out of the home safely.
