South Carolina Fire Department Gets New ATV

Dec. 6, 2006
The department says it needs the ATV to carry equipment and firefighters to off-road emergencies.

A fire truck is the usual rescue vehicle for firefighters, but now one Upstate department has a new way to get around.

The Pelham-Batesville Fire Department unveiled its new all-terrain vehicle Tuesday morning.

The department says it needs the ATV to carry equipment and firefighters to off-road emergencies.

Another reason they got it was to cover the 11 miles of the Enoree River which falls in their district.

"This will gives us the ability to mount a stretcher rack on the back of this unit and actually drive down to them and then load them up and carry them back out," Pelham-Batesville Fire Chief Phill Jolley told WYFF News 4's Mark Allen.

The department was able to buy the ATV thanks to a $10,000 grant from Papa John's and Fireman's Fund Insurance Company.
