Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine joined with the families of Virginia Fallen Firefighters and their departments to honor those who paid the ultimate price in the Line of Duty. The ceremony took place on June 7, at the Richmond Raceway Complex.
A flag supported by Chesterfield, Prince William and Richmond aerial ladders was a stark reminder of the solemness of the occassion.
Firefighters honored were:
Bernard Edward Emerson, Jr. of the City of Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Date of Death: July 27, 2006. Rank: Lieutenant. Years of Service: 18. Age: 44.
Billy William Harris of the City of Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Date of Death: December 27, 2006. Rank: Master Firefighter. Years of Service: 18. Age: 54.
Kyle Robert Wilson of Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue. Date of Death: April 16, 2007. Rank: Technician I. Years of service: 1 year, 3 months. Age: 24.
John Edward Thomas of Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue. Date of Death: January 30, 2006. Rank: Technician II. Years of service: 3 years, 9 months. Age: 34.
Joseph Everette Newsome of Chesterfield Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department. Date of Death: April 23, 2007. Rank: Captain. Years of service: 24 (18 with Chesterfield). Age: 42.
At noon,a siren pierced the air announcing the beginning of the ceremony. St. Andews Legion then led the procession so the colors could be posted by the Honor Guard.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by W.G.Shelton, Executive Director of Virginia Department of Fire Programs. The National Anthem was sung by Shauna Anton and Kristin Gainous-Anderson. Invocation was offered by Reverend Bruce Gray of Richmond Fire and Emergency Medical Services.
Susan Greenbaum performed "Simple Man". A prayer was offered by Pastor Pete Hypes Chesterfield Fire and Emergency Medical Services. Eulogies were offered by department members. Introduction of Governor Timothy M. Kaine was offered by John W. Marshall, Secretary of Public Safety.
Poem "United Firefighters of America" was read by Roy S. Quesenberry, Eagle Scout. Susan Greenbaum then performed "Love Song".
Governor Timothy M. Kaine and John Marshall then presented flags to the families of the fallen. Virginia Public Safety Honor Guard performed history and tolling of the bell. Taps was played by Captain Jerry Reed, Newport News Fire Department.
The Benediction was offered by Reverend Doctor Jeff Carter, Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue. The colors were retired and a reception sponsored by Virginia Professional Firefighters followed.
