A 50-year-old man was rescued from the roof of his home Sunday morning in Bethesda after what authorities described as a malfunctioning oil furnace sparked a fire.

The fire started at about 6:30 a.m. in the 4700 block of Maple Street, News4 reported.

The man climbed onto the roof of the home because thick smoke prevented him from reaching the front door.

Firefighters used a truck ladder to get reach him. About 65 to 75 firefighters battled the fire.

The victim was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation.

Stored combustibles in the basement fueled the fire, News4 reported.

The home was being renovated. Damage is estimated to be about $500,000, News4 reported.
